【Summary】
The Portuguese Jesuit missionary Luís Froís left a vast manuscript of his experiences in Japan during 37 years in the second half of the 16th century. He reports on his visits to Gifu Castle and Azuchi Castle, as well as his conversations with Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Sen no Rikyu.
Professor Castel-Branco, a landscape researcher who recently published a book on Luis Frois, will be invited to discuss how he observed Japanese gardens, cities and landscapes through Western eyes and how he expressed their characteristics from the perspective of comparative cultural studies.
