Report for the Award Ceremony and the Lecture for the “2nd Professor Josef Kreiner Hosei University Award for International Japanese Studies”
Hosei University Research Center for International Japanese Studies (HIJAS) held the Award Ceremony and the Lecture for the 2nd Professor Josef Kreiner Hosei University Award for International Japanese Studies at Hosei University on 17th January 2017.
At the ceremony of awarding an honor, Dr. Luke Gartlan of the University of St Andrews was commended by Professor Yuko Tanaka, the President of Hosei University and Professor Emeritus Dr. Josef Kreiner congratulated Dr. Gartlan’s achievements.
Then Dr. Gartlan made the commemorative speech entitled “Challenging the Official Record: Rethinking Emperor Meiji’s Photographic Portraits” (translater was Dr. Yusuke Suzumura of the HIJAS). In his speech, Dr. Gartlan whose topic was based on his award winning book A Career of Japan: Baron Raimund Von Stillfried and Early Yokohama Photography (Brill, 2016) examined meanings of Emperor Meiji’s picture taken by Baron Raimund Freiherr von Stillfried at Yokosuka on 1st January 1872 from social, political and cultural aspects.
