“Japanese Research and Education at Ca’ Foscari University, Italy: Enthusiasm towards Nurturing Human Resources”

Dr. Rosa Caroli, Professor of the East Asian Institute, Ca’ Foscari University, Italy, visited our university on 16 March 2009, and talked with HOSHINO Tsutomu, Governor, and ABIKO Shin, Director of the Research Center for International Japanese Studies, and WANG Min, Professor and staff appointee of the Center. Rosa Caroli specializes in modern Japanese history, in particular Okinawan history, and has hitherto contributed greatly to research cooperation as her role of guest staff in our Research Center for International Japanese Studies.

We heard from Professor Caroli about Japanese research and education at the East Asian Institute, Ca’ Foscari University. At present, with employment prospects in mind, there are more students studying Chinese politics and economics than those of Japan, but regarding cultural matters, there is an opposite phenomenon of more students studying Japanese culture. Employment difficulties for students majoring in Japanese and staff shortage are serious problems, but she talked enthusiastically about reorganizing the teaching environment and nurturing Japan-related human resources.

Those present agreed on developing cooperation between the two institutions a degree further, and it became a fruitful discussion. We await the results of Professor Caroli’s further activity within Japanese research and education in Italy.
